My Angel With Paws is a not-for-profit Organization providing expert trained service dogs for children and adults with physical disabilities. Our dogs not only assist with physical tasks, but also provide social support and other needs.

Service dogs are trained to assist people with mobility impairments. In addition to over 90 physical tasks they may be trained to perform, service dogs give emotional support to their owners.

Learning to live with a disability is a traumatic and oftern overwhelming process. Studies have found that within six months of receiving a service dog participants demonstrated an increase in self-esteem, psychological well-being, community integration and also a 70 percent decrease in home aide needs. That's a pretty significant finding.

We try to understand the needs and concerns of others with physical disabilities and special needs.

• We try to understand the little boy with muscular dystrophy who won't go to school in his wheelchair because he feels different from the other children.
• We try to understand the terror of the young man, a quadriplegic from a diving accident, who must spend hours alone in his home because insurance won't pay for a full time attendant.
• We try to understand the urgency in the voice of the young girl who has cerebral palsy when she begs us to hurry and train a dog for her because she doesn't want to be alone anymore.

Miracles... One Angel At A Time

The animal / human bond is the foundation of My Angel With Paws. We celebrate the mutually beneficial and dynamic relationship between people and animals honoring the dignity and well being of all.

Proper socialization and environmental exposure at a very young age is critical. The puppies must be exposed to household sights and sounds, as many different people as possible, community exposure as well as work environments.

Our puppy raiser / trainer volunteers are the core of My Angel With Paws. They take our Angels In Training into their homes and hearts for approximately 1 1/2 years during which time they oversee their training, socialization and development into successful service dogs.

Most of all, our Angels need to be loved and cuddled and played with and enjoyed. Our My Angel With Paws puppy classes will teach you how to giude your Angel In Training toward their full potential.

When your Angel In Training is about 1 1/2 years old, he is now ready to come in to My Angel With Paws training facility for his final training phase. He will be evaluated for skills and temperament to be matched with his perfect partner. His skills will be honed and he will learn client specific advanced skills. Your Angel has now earned his wings.

Getting A Service Dog

Prospective clients who are waiting for their service dog to be selected and trained receive regular visits from My Angel With Paws and a therapy dog.

The visits are very important in helping us learn more about our clients. We gather information about what tasks the clients need their service dog to perform and which canine personality traits would be the most suitable.

When a client is getting close to receiving a service dog, our trainers also visit the clients in their homes and the client will begin learning the commands, practicing with an education dog. When they are partnered with their dog, a 2 week Partner Training will take place. During this training session partners will go on lots of outings to the mall, the grocery store, church, restaurants, and the many other places our clients frequent.

Even after the service dog is partnered with the client in their home, our visits continue.

The placement is simply the beginning of a long and treasured relationship with our organization. Throughout the life of the client/service dog partnerships we continue to visit them in their homes to monitor the service dog's health and to ensure that the dog's skills are staying sharp.

Our clients become like family and join our staff and volunteers at various celebrations and gatherings throughout the year. Staying in touch is a hallmark of our client relationships.

My Angel with Paws invests a great deal of time making certain the client has the knowledge and skill to be successful with their service dog.

Our ultimate goal is for the client's partnership, both with their dog and with our organization, to be a very long and happy one.

Our Placement Services

Our education process is very thorough and supportive, covering everything a future service dog user will need to know to fulfill their obligation to the partnership.

We make in-home visits and spread the education process out over several months. Our visits continue ever after placement, as we assist our graduates in keeping their service dog's skills sharp plus assisting with training new skills as needed.
